Requirements: Children's books featuring Nobby Travels, marketing, advertising, website
Weird Grape Publishing were embarking on a series of children’s books about a chocolate coloured labrador puppy called Nobby, and they approached in2orbit to devise some illustrations to determine what Nobby looked like. On approval, the Nobby character was developed further for 2 series of 6 books. The concept of the story line for each book was that Nobby travelled around the world to different interesting places via his magic dog flap. He travelled to New York, London, Italy, Spain, Australia and Scotland to name just a few of Nobby’s adventures.
In total we have produced 13 books to date, each book is roughly 40 pages long and features illustrations on each page. The stories are aimed at children aged 4 to 9 and are intended to be entertaining and educational.
We developed the Nobby brand for the books, advertising and the website.
Advertising was placed in the national and local press as well as in Teacher trade magazines. Nobby Travels books have featured in articles in many magazines and in particular one of the red-top tabloids when some of the stars of the England football team helped out with a promotion to encourage children to read more by reading some of the Nobby Travels books.
Additionally in2orbit were asked to design and produce exhibition display banner stands and Nobby merchandise for the launch at Hamleys Toy store in London.
The website features an animation of Nobby running - as an intro to the site, an online purchasing facility, a members area, online books, downloadable colouring-in illustrations a press area and also a Nobby Travels sponsored National Book Review competition. This feature requested children from all over the UK to write a review of their favourite book. Weird Grape received thousands of entries and had to whittle the entries down to the top 20. Anyone could then visit the site and vote on their favourite review. It was all very exciting as the lead changed hands several times.
